Building a Finance Analytics Ecosystem from the Ground Up

When Wayland joined Standard BioTools, Finance reporting relied heavily on ERP inquiries and static cross-entity reports. He built the Finance reporting environment from the ground up and established a shared reporting source across revenue, OpEx, EBITDA, and forecasting.

The work gave FP&A more timely access to financial information and supported more consistent forecasting, variance analysis, target setting, and executive reporting. He also partnered with IT to address reporting governance, proposing that transformations move into the controlled data-engineering layer to improve governance, auditability, and processing efficiency.

Beyond reporting modernization, Wayland automated recurring month-end processes, built Copilot Studio agents for D365 query assistance and Power BI ticket intake, and evaluated Microsoft Fabric capacity and Copilot enablement as part of a controlled approach to AI adoption.

Modernizing Enterprise Analytics Delivery

At Canada Life, Wayland led enterprise Power BI delivery for the PSHCP program and led a three-person analytics team across sprint objectives, priority setting, quality reviews, stakeholder feedback, and technical mentorship.

He cut Power BI deployment and refresh time from approximately four hours to minutes by improving the release process and selectively refreshing required partitions in large incremental-refresh models.

He created paginated-report development standards adopted across the team and became a go-to resource for difficult Power BI issues. His contribution was recognized through selection as one of Canada Life’s five Power BI Champions, providing organization-wide training and consulting support.

Data Transformation, Automation, and Operational Risk

At Munich Re, Wayland advanced from developer to Acting Team Lead within the P34 digital transformation. His work combined automation, data quality, operational risk management, and stakeholder leadership.

He reduced manual intervention by 95% through automation and improved automated application rates from 27% to 78% by refining transformation and business-rule logic.

During a major data load, Wayland identified that valid records were being dropped by the orchestration engine. He stopped affected loads, validated the root cause, developed solution options, presented the issue to the COO, and led development of a hotfix implemented within one week. The issue represented a potential multimillion-dollar impact.

He later led a four-person analytics support function and standardized the request process, reducing turnaround from more than two weeks to under one week.
